Mia and Connor have decided to hold a traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony with their immediate family and wedding party the Friday before.

This ceremony is a tradition in parts of China and helps the the couple honor their families by serving tea to both set of parents and relatives. Most individuals view the tea ceremony as a symbol of the families recognizing and accepting the new person into their family. This can be especially true for the groom's side. Modern duos also look to this ritual as a way to express their gratitude to their parents, future in-laws, and any other older relatives if applicable. “It means, ‘I am marrying into this family. I will show my respect by serving tea to the elders,'"

Dress Code

Do not wear red, like with western traditions, red is saved for the bride.
Don’t wear white or black. These colors are often worn at Chinese funerals and signify death and mourning. It’s considered bad luck, so it’s best to stay away from wearing these colors. However, black or white accents are just fine!
Purples, pinks, and warm tones are great options to wear, as these colors represent the new life the couple will embark on. Individuals who wish to may wear a qipao or a traditional chinese dress. This is not an obligation, but is welcome to all guests!

What to Gift

Chinese Tea Ceremony Info

It is understood that there will be a western wedding ceremony the following day, so do not feel obligated to give gifts on this day.

Here are a few things to avoid giving the newlywed couple:

  • Anything in sets of 4

    • The number 4 is considered unlucky because it’s name “si” sounds like the word for death. It is similar to the connotation of the number “13” in western society.

  • Pear Fruit

    • The word for pear “li” is the same as the word for separation. It is bad luck to share a pear, especially at a wedding, because it is believed to cause separation.

  • Cut Flowers

    • Though flowers are beautiful and thoughtful gifts, this could typically be seen as a symbol of death, especially for yellow chrysanthemums and white flowers. Cut flowers are usually presents for funerals.

Here's an option you can gift the newlywed couple:

  • Red Envelopes

    • It is common for guests to give money in red envelopes as gifts. Give what you feel comfortable with. The bride and groom will provide these envelopes, to be used for this exact reason.

    • For bonus points, give an amount that ends in eight for good luck and prosperity (and avoid amounts that include the number 4)
